The spectacular columnar jointing at Fingal Head near Tweed Heads, was caused by contraction: as lava cools from the outside toward the centre, shrinkage cracks develop, usually forming hexagonal patterns. These columns are vertical because the lava flow was horizontal.
在特维德角附近的芬格尔赫德,游客可观赏到壮观的柱状节理景观。由于熔岩冷却过程中的收缩作用,当熔岩从外部向中心冷却时,裂缝扩大,通常形成六边形的收缩裂缝。由于熔岩流呈水平流动,因此形成垂直的石柱。
